Two Nights at CastleSpa Wagenküll in December

Two Nights at CastleSpa Wagenküll in December

So December in Estonia can be a bit…intense. Cold, dark, and honestly a little draining when you’ve had a busy few months. That’s exactly where we found ourselves—tired, craving something cozy and romantic. So we decided to escape for two nights to CastleSpa Wagenküll.

And honestly? It felt like stepping into a completely different world.

We drove there in the afternoon, and already the journey itself felt like part of the experience. The further we got from the city, the quieter everything became. Snow-covered trees, soft winter light, that kind of peaceful silence you don’t even realize you’ve been missing.

Arriving at the castle was... wow. It genuinely looked like something out of a fairytale. Especially in December, when everything is decorated and softly lit, it just hits differently.

The Winter Wonderland Garden

I loved that the gardens surrounding the castle weren’t just “nice to walk around” — they had an actual winter wonderland exhibition set up. And not in a tacky way, but in a really cinematic and atmospheric kind of way. Especially the lit up layout of real life planets.

We went there in the evening, which I 100% recommend. The lights, the installations, the imaginary snow (unfortunately we did not have it!)—everything together created this calm but festive mood. It wasn’t crowded or noisy, just people quietly walking around, taking it all in.

I loved that it felt immersive without trying too hard. Like you could just wander, talk, or stay silent and enjoy it.

The Spa Experience

Now let’s talk about the spa, because that was honestly the highlight.

I loved that the spa area felt spacious and not overly crowded, even though it’s a popular place. There were different saunas, relaxation areas, and pools—but the best part?

The big outdoor hot pool.

We went there at night, and I think that’s exactly how it’s meant to be experienced. Sitting in a steaming hot pool, surrounded by cold winter air, looking up at the dark sky… it was one of those moments where you just stop talking for a bit and think, “this is actually perfect.”

I loved how warm the water was, almost too warm at first, but then you settle in and don’t want to leave. The contrast between the freezing air and hot water made it feel even more special.

We also tried a few different saunas, but honestly, nothing topped that outdoor pool moment.

The Restaurant

We also dined at the spa’s restaurant, and I had slightly high expectations—but it did not disappoint.

I loved that the atmosphere was calm and cozy, not overly fancy or stiff. It matched the whole experience really well. The food itself was genuinely good—well presented, flavorful, and comforting, which is exactly what you want after spending hours in the spa.

It felt like one of those dinners where you’re not in a rush. You just sit, eat slowly, talk, and enjoy the moment.

Second dinner there disappointed a bit- service felt a bit chaotic, waiting time was long and the barley groats did not match with the duck very well. The Overall Stay

Two nights felt like the perfect amount of time. The first evening was all about settling in and exploring, the second day was full spa mode, and by the third morning, we actually felt rested.

And that’s the key thing—I really felt the difference after leaving. More relaxed, more present, less in that constant rush mode.

The breakfast buffet included really high quality and fresh ingredients.

I loved that it didn’t feel like a typical hotel stay. It felt more like a proper little escape, even though it was just a short trip.

I hated… honestly, there’s not much to complain about here. Maybe only that going back to normal life after something like this always feels a bit abrupt.

Final Thoughts

If you’re thinking about doing a winter getaway in Estonia, especially during December, this place is kind of a no-brainer.

It has that rare combination of:

  • cozy and luxurious without being overwhelming
  • peaceful but still interesting
  • simple but memorable

And that outdoor pool under the night sky? That alone is worth the trip.

Would I go again? Absolutely. Maybe even make it a yearly December tradition.
