Three Nights of Doing Absolutely Nothing (And Loving Every Minute)

Three Nights of Doing Absolutely Nothing (And Loving Every Minute)

I don't know about you, but I often get this feeling that weekends disappear before they've even begun. One moment it's Friday evening, the next it's Sunday night, and somehow you've managed to answer work emails, clean the house and do grocery shopping instead of actually relaxing. So this time we decided to do things differently.

We booked three nights at Rooslepa Seaside Getaway in Noarootsi, on the western coast of Estonia. The only goal was to slow down. No sightseeing checklist, no packed itinerary, no alarms. Just us, the forest and hopefully some decent weather.

The drive there already felt like switching into a different gear. As the roads became smaller and the forests denser, it felt like we were leaving everyday life behind. Rooslepa isn't one of those places you accidentally end up in. You actually have to want to go there, and that's exactly what makes it special.

The house itself immediately exceeded my expectations. Sometimes accommodation photos can be... optimistic. You arrive and spend the first ten minutes wondering which camera lens was responsible for the deception. Thankfully this wasn't one of those places. It looked just as cosy as in the pictures, maybe even better.

The cabin sits quietly in the middle of a pine forest with almost no neighbours in sight. The silence was honestly one of the first things I noticed. Not the awkward kind of silence, but the peaceful one where all you hear are birds singing, trees moving in the wind and the occasional rustling somewhere in the forest that makes you wonder whether it's a deer... or just a particularly ambitious squirrel.

Inside, everything had been thought through. The kitchen had everything we needed, the living room felt warm and homely, and the whole place was spotlessly clean. It didn't feel like a rental—it felt like someone's carefully designed holiday home that they genuinely wanted people to enjoy. The wood, the earthy colours and the huge windows made the whole place blend beautifully into the surrounding nature.

One of my favourite parts was definitely the sauna. I honestly think almost every Estonian getaway becomes at least 50% better if there's a sauna involved. There's just something about spending the evening in the heat before stepping outside into the fresh forest air. Afterwards we simply sat outside with drinks, listening to absolutely nothing. It's funny how quickly your brain adjusts when there's no constant noise around you.

The nearest beach is only about a 10–15 minute walk through a beautiful forest path. That walk alone was worth it. Tall pine trees, soft forest floor and that unmistakable smell of the sea slowly getting stronger the closer you get. When we finally reached the beach, there were barely any people around. It almost felt like we'd discovered our own little corner of the Estonian coastline.

The funny thing is that we barely "did" anything during those three days. We slept longer than usual, made slow breakfasts, read a little, made fire in the fireplace, went for walks, had sauna sessions and simply enjoyed not having to be anywhere. It reminded me that sometimes doing nothing is actually doing something very important.

Of course, no place is absolutely perfect.

If I had to mention one tiny downside, it would probably be that the tap water has a rather distinct smell. It wasn't a big issue at all, but it was noticeable. Apparently we're not the only ones who thought so, judging by some of the guest reviews. Still, it definitely wasn't something that affected our stay in any meaningful way.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you're looking for nightlife, restaurants around every corner or lots of attractions, this probably isn't your place. You have to appreciate peace and nature to really enjoy Rooslepa. For us, that was exactly the point. After constantly looking at screens, notifications and crowded places, it almost felt like a reset button for the brain.

It's quite funny how we often think we need to fly somewhere far away to truly switch off. But sometimes all it takes is a small wooden cabin hidden among pine trees only a few hours from home.

Would I go back?

Without hesitation.

I can honestly see this becoming one of those places we return to every once in a while whenever life starts feeling a little too loud. Three nights felt like the perfect amount of time to fully unwind without getting bored.

If your idea of a perfect getaway includes silence, nature, long walks, a cosy cabin and a sauna instead of shopping centres and busy tourist attractions, then I genuinely think you'll love this place as much as we did.

Sometimes the best trips aren't the ones where you see the most.

They're the ones where you finally get to slow down.
